REXKL Co-founders selected as 2020 Gen.T honourees

Shin Tseng and Sin Chang, co-founders of RexKL and 2020 Gen.T honourees

GEN.T is unveiling the 400 honourees on the Gen.T List 2020 at a total of four launch events over the next two weeks, starting in Kuala Lumpur, Taipei and Shanghai—followed by Hong Kong, Singapore, the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand.

The Leaders of Tomorrow

"The 29 young leaders from Malaysia selected for the Gen.T List 2020 represent the future. They are the successful entrepreneurs, professionals and creatives we believe are the Leaders of Tomorrow."

The co-founders:

RexKL has been a cinema, a backpackers’ hostel, migrant housing and the victim of two fires, but architect Shin Tseng’s revitalisation has given this classic building its highest purpose. He and his team revived RexKL’s cultural heritage but kept the structure and atmosphere; this created a creative space for artists and entrepreneurs to host film screenings, political lectures, performance events, tuak rice wine brewing workshops and vintage flea markets, among other events, elevating the neighbourhood in the process.

Architect Shin Chang, who runs MentahMatter Design, is behind the repurposing of Kuala Lumpur’s iconic Rex Cinema into RexKL, a new cultural centre for artists, creatives and entrepreneurs. Along with fellow architect and co-founder Shin Tseng, he revived the historic threestorey building and instituted a vibrant programme of events, from design workshops, film screenings and open-mic nights to artisanal workshops, restaurant and bar pop-ups, performances and talks.
